Palliative Care

Palliative Care is the approach taken to treat patients when a disease is not curable and life-limiting, focusing on comfort and quality of life. Palliative care affirms death as a natural process and does not hasten it. Palliative care aims to treat patients holistically, meeting their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Palliative Care Support Champions appointed across CoEJ Jamaats

Palliative Care Support Champions have been appointed in the majority of CoEJ Jamaats. Their role is to identify the support available within the Jamaat & local community and to signpost you to these resources. These may include befriending services, cancer support groups, local hospices, or Macmillan teams.

The Champion’s role is supportive — to help you understand the decisions that your doctors have made regarding your care. They can support you in the following:

  1. What does it mean to have a life-limiting illness?
  2. Why is it important to engage in discussions with the doctors about the type of care you would like to receive when very poorly?
  3. How can you express your wishes about what care you would want if you lost your mental capacity in the future?
  4. Appointing a lasting power of attorney.

All of these issues are really important for us as Muslims as it gives us the opportunity to have control over our care when terminally unwell.
